John G. Smale, former CEO of Procter & Gamble and Chairman of GM, passed away earlier this week at the age of 84. He was one of the 'Captains of American Industry.'

John was the CEO of P&G during my tenure there in the late 1970’s-early 1980’s. Being a rather lowly Brand Manager in Canada (a seemingly distant outpost of the P&G empire) meant that there were at least four or five levels of management between us. Nevertheless, this made him technically my first boss.

Mention of John was done part in reverence…

I am very excited about the Women’s Forum program we are putting together for the upcoming P&G Alumni Reunion. We are leveraging the theme from the main Reunion program: “Postcards from the Emerging Edge” and applying that to a cross section of topics as they relate to emerging trends in women’s issues, addressed in a way that will appeal to women and men alike. As previously highlighted, we are extremely pleased to have Daniela Riccardi, CEO of Diesel, join us as our keynote speaker on Thursday evening during our opening dinner. We follow that with our program on Friday…
